My Elephant Project

Hare Krishna!

On my travels to the North East State Assam, I met a lot of elephants, elephant experts and Professional, and also many traditional mahouts or Elephant handlers/care takers.

I visited many remote Villages near thick forest areas, where simple village people are depended on the Elephants for their livelihoods. These Villagers are using the Elephants to howl logs from the forest. Unfortunately the Indian Government has put a ban on logging and as a result of that, the Elephants that are in private hands, have no more work. Now only the Government is engaged in Logging activities and engages only their own Elephants in Logging.

Besides learning a lot about Elephants and their care, I also learned about many ugly things that are going on in that part of the World concerning elephants.

As a result of the logging ban, the poor villagers who keep Elephants, have no more means to provide the necessary care it takes to maintain an elephant.

Ambitious businessmen are taken advantage of this situation and buy off useless Elephants from the villagers to sell them at a very high price in some other part of the country.

I ran across one of those "useless" Elephants in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. This Elephant however was not so lucky. (don't worry the story has a happy ending).

The elephants name is Laksmi Mala. When I met her, she was tied up behind a Veterinary clinic. She had been diagnosed of having Tuberculosis. I was told that she had been sold by her owner and later on rejected by the buyer and left to die in a forest somewhere. Luckily my friend Dwipen Kalita learned about her and treated her with traditional herbs. When she did not recover however, he brought her to the clinic. At that time there was not much hope for Laksmi Mala. The veterinary Doctor at the clinc, Dr K.K. Sarma, another friend of mine, with much Love and attention, with the help of medicines, nurtured her back to a state where she had a chance to survive. When I met her, she had already tested negative for Tuberculosis.

I found a Sponsor for this Elephant and with the help of that Sponsor, she was brought to a nice village place near the jungle, where she is being cared for nicely. She is getting more and more healthy now, as she gets to eat all the natural foods an Elephant needs to eat along with fresh spring water. Besides good food, she is provided plenty of space to exercise.

My Elephant Project

Hari bol every one.

Who you see here is Laksmipriya the Elephant. I have been working to bring her to Sri Dham Mayapur for some time now. This picture I took last week when I went up to Jorhat, Assam, where she is right now.
Laksmipriya LOVES to eat! She eats up to 18 hours per day. Her favorite foods are Bamboo leaves and Banana Trees. Yes, she eats the whole tree, she loves especially the core. We tried to feed her some bananas, however she only will accept them if they are tree ripened; if they are not, she spits them out.

Laksmipriya is very intelligent and funny at the same time. When she does not want to be disturbed during eating, she lifts her leg towards you. if you touch her on her trunk or forehead while eating, she makes a loud roar.

As time and connection speed permits, I will post some more pictures and history about this Elephant and also another Elephant by the name Vishnupriya. Vishnupriya is also coming to Mayapur. She is smaller than Laksmipriya.

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy
